Lake Scugog Sailing Club

The Lake Scugog Sailing Club was officially formed on October 29, 2009. The club was formed for recreational and social purposes, sailing and learning new skills and information sharing on sailboats. The membership wanted to sail with like-minded sailors. They expressed the hope that club members could go sailing as a group on Wednesday nights during the late spring, summer and early fall.
Please join us, to learn about our club. Meeting times will be posted soon.
See our current Schedule of Events. We wish to have an informal club with the emphasis on getting out on Lake Scugog and sailing.
Club Membership Fees - $100
Advantages to being part of a sailing club (courtesy of John Wilson)
- We have a meeting place where like-minded people can chat, share stories.
- We have people that we can share or swap ideas and equipment.
- When we are sailing, we have others who are out there sailing with us whom we know. There are people among us who have ample knowledge and experience in sailing that we can talk to and learn from. For example:
- Phil showed us how to install a "lazy jack".
- Kelly took me out and showed me "heaving to", an amazing phenomenon that I had never experienced before.
- We can always feel safe when we’re sailing because we keep a watchful eye on each other. (already Kelly has rescued me and Baby Blue, on two different occasions).
- There are opportunities for new and exciting experiences:
- Phil called me up in the middle of winter and asked me if I would like to go ice-sailing—was that ever fun!
- The annual regatta is a race to find out how your own craft and your sailing expertise stack up with the others. (unless not winning can be explained by a freak change in the wind)
- There are opportunities to go sailing with people on different boats
- There are learn-to-sail programs for all ages, at the marina.
- Everyone is willing to lend a helping hand:
- If you need a hand with repairs, moving your boat, etc.
- If you need to borrow a piece of equipment, your trailer tire is low, you need an extra life jacket, borrow a specific tool, use of a battery etc., somebody will be there to help you out.
- We have a place where we can meet, sit down and talk, enjoy a meal, discuss business, celebrate an occasion, take part in a learning workshop, watch a movie, etc.
- There are opportunities for us in the future to have our own place on site for private meetings, storing equipment, full time access to washrooms, etc.
- There are special sailing opportunities for club members and their friends like:
- Full moon sails, Picnic on the point, Sailing Regatta, First Sail, Sail Past, Wed. night community sailing
Social Events
- Surf and Turf feast
- Pizza Night
- Movie Night
- Clean-up day
- Year-end Potluck Supper
There are opportunities to have your say/participate in LSSC matters by attending club meetings.
Our club is young. It has a great team of organizers that has gained a lot in experience from the previous leadership of Phil Brooks and the guidance of Kelly Patterson. It is with enthusiasm and a great feeling of support that we are pleased to help our club move forward for the next 2 years.
If you have more questions, please contact Aant koonstra, President by email. You may also contact Kelly Patterson, Beacon Marina, at 905-435-3907. We'd be pleased to receive calls or emails about our sailing club.
Come sail with us!
